Vision on the Field- Seeing the Game Before It Happens

Published on 23 August 2025 at 00:07

One of the qualities that separates good players from great players is vision. It’s the ability to read the game, anticipate the next move, and make decisions before the ball even arrives.

At Ontario Fütbol Academy, we teach our players that vision isn’t about having the sharpest eyes — it’s about developing awareness, confidence, and understanding of the game.

Why Vision Matters

Anticipation Over Reaction – Players who see the game unfolding are always one step ahead.

Better Decision-Making – Vision allows players to choose the smartest pass, safest outlet, or most dangerous attack.

Team Leadership – A player with strong vision raises the level of everyone around them.

How We Train Vision at OFA

Scanning the Field – We encourage players to check their shoulders and look around before receiving the ball.

Small-Sided Games – Tight spaces force quick thinking and awareness of teammates’ positioning.

Tactical Talks – Coaches break down real-game situations, teaching players to recognize patterns and anticipate outcomes.

Lessons Beyond Soccer

Vision isn’t just a skill for the soccer field. It’s a life skill. Having vision means planning ahead, preparing for challenges, and making choices that set you up for success. Whether in school, at home, or in future careers, vision helps our players become leaders both on and off the field.

⚽ This week’s challenge to our players:

Next time you’re at practice or playing a casual game, make it your goal to look around at least twice before receiving the ball. Get into the habit of scanning the field — the sooner you start, the sharper your vision becomes.
